Women, Infants, and Children - WIC Overseas Program
The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children - better known as the WIC Program - serves to safeguard the health of income-qualified women, infants, & children up to age 5 who are at nutritional risk by providing nutritious foods to supplement diets, information on healthy eating, and referrals to health care. The Department of Defense (DoD) has funded WIC Program benefits for overseas U.S. Uniformed Service Members, DoD civilian employees, DoD contractors, and their families since 2001 through the WIC Overseas Program.
Population Served:
The WIC Overseas target population is income-qualified, nutritionally at risk:
- Pregnant women (through pregnancy and up to 6 weeks after birth or after pregnancy ends).
- Breastfeeding women (up to infant's 1st birthday).
- Non-breastfeeding postpartum women (up to 6 months after the birth of an infant or after pregnancy ends).
- Infants (up to 1st birthday). WIC serves 45 percent of all infants born in the United States.
- Children up to their 5th birthday.
Benefits:
The following benefits are provided to WIC Overseas participants:
- Supplemental nutritious foods.
- Nutrition education and counseling.
- Screening and referrals to other health and community resources.
