News Release, 23 Dec 2008, USAG Bavaria Public Affairs

Local Dining facility runner-up in Army-wide competition

GRAFENWOEHR, Germany - The CSM (Command Sgt. Maj.) Lawrence T. Hickey Dining Facility at Camp Normandy here was announced Dec. 19 as runner-up in the U.S. Army best large garrison dining facility category of the recent 2009 DA Philip A. Connelly Awards Competition for excellence in Army food service.

The Grafenwoehr dining facility represented the European Army garrison in the Army-wide competition and was runner-up to the 2nd Battalion, 39th Infantry Regiment Dining Facility at Fort Jackson, S.C.

"I thank my team for their great work all year long, and especially for this competition," said Gerhard Bessner, Camp Normandy DFAC manager. "No matter we how fare in competitions, my team will always be the number one team to me," he added.

In the past, Bessner's dining facility has won the IMCOM-Europe best facility award three times, and in 2006 they took home the DA Connelly award in the best large garrison dining facility category. Bessner has been managing DFACs since 1976, and the Camp Normandy DFAC since it's opening in March 2005,

"The food service staffs of these units deserve special recognition for their contribution toward improving the Army's food service program and for their superior efforts in enhancing the quality of food service for our Soldiers," said John Q. McNulty, chief of the Army's the Food and Liquid Division. "All finalists displayed high standards of excellence, were very competitive and are congratulated for their outstanding performances."

Grafenwoehr Theater Opening Delayed Until 1 June 09

The reopening of the Grafenwoehr Tower Theater will be delayed until at least 1 June 2009, according to Tom Hays, Director of Public Works for USAG Bavaria.

A problem was discovered during the renovation of the lobby area that will require additional time to correct. "The wall separating the lobby from the auditorium was supposed to be a fire protection wall according to the building plans," said Hays. "When we opened the wall up, it did not meet current fire code requirements, and we have to tear out the old wall and replace it with new materials - and this takes time. The safety of our community members remains our top priority in any construction project," he added.
Mr. Hays says it is not unusual to encounter structural situations such as this when renovating older buildings, the Grafenwoehr Tower Theater originally having been constructed in 1949. He added that the theater's new lobby area will have clear windows replacing the old glass-block walls, improved access to meet handicapped requirements, refurbished restrooms, and a new concession stand.

AAFES is taking advantage of this project to install a Dolby sound system, rebuild their projectors and other customer enhancements. The new lobby renovations follow on after a new roof and exterior painting projects to the theater that took place in 2007 and 2008.

Grafenwoehr community members are encouraged to use the Vilseck theater, open seven days a week, while the Tower Theater continues its renovations.

Matinees are planned for the holidays at the Vilseck theater, and dates and times are listed in the "Bavarian News" community newspaper.
