Welcome to the Grafenwoehr Military Community, Europe’s premier location to live, work and train! With more than 25,000 Soldiers, Family members, and civilians, we are also one of the largest military communities in Europe.
The Army’s “bootprint” in Bavaria includes U.S. Army Garrison Grafenwoehr, U.S. Army Garrison Hohenfels, and U.S. Army Garrison Garmisch. Our mission is to provide quality base operations and community support for all U.S. personnel in Grafenwoehr-Vilseck, Hohenfels and Garmisch. We directly support the 7th Army JMTC, Grafenwoehr Training Area, the Combat Maneuver Training Command, and many other tenant units. We also support the American Embassy in Berlin and their consulate in Munich.
The Grafenwoehr Training Area is the largest NATO training area in Europe and was first established by Prince Luitpold of Bavaria in 1907 in order to train the Bavarian III Corps. During World War II, the Wehrmacht trained here and guarded enemy prisoners of war. June 30, 2010, marked the commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the training area, the 65th anniversary of the American presence in Grafenwoehr, and the 55th anniversary of the formation of our German military partner, the Bundeswehr.
The Grafenwoehr Military Community has much to offer when it comes to quality of life facilities, shopping and medical facilities, government and leased housing, child care facilities and schools ... there is so much to discover, I encourage you to browse through our webpages and associated links and discover the many excellent opportunities and facilities within.
In addition to the military facilities available here, our location makes us an ideal location for trips and visits to nearby local German sites of interest. You can participate in the biggest beer fest in the world (Munich's Oktoberfest), tour the castle that Walt Disney copied for Sleeping Beauty's castle in DisneyLand (Neuschwanstein Castle), buy world famous crystal or porcelain at rock bottom prices, or visit Poland, Italy, the Swiss Alps, Austria, the Czech Republic and many other unique and beautiful sites.
